SD08 - Call for Papers

The Minerals Council of Australia is calling for papers that focus on Solutions through Collaboration and highlight the economic, environmental and social interactions that are enabling the sector to make a substantial contribution to sustainable development.

Presentations demonstrating collaborative partnerships and innovative solutions are sought from the minerals sector, other industries, government and the community in Australia and abroad.  Some suggested topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

Natural resource management

  • Biodiversity and land management: use of market-based instruments, carbon-biodiversity offsets and market interactions, sustainable landscape management
  • Water access and use: managing resource security, assessment of climate impacts on resource security, ground-surface water interactions, accounting water quality and quantity, water use efficiency improvements
  • Rehabilitation: new and innovative technologies, social frameworks for land management, Indigenous land management 

Impact assessment & risk management

  • Stakeholder engagement: engagement for mine-closure planning, novel stakeholder identification and engagement techniques, Indigenous community engagement models
  • Governance: building sustainability into corporate culture, the bottom-line benefits of sustainability, sustainability accounting
  • Cumulative impact assessments: use of multiple criteria analysis, sustainability assessment and reporting, risk-based assessments for management of environment and community health impacts

Investment in innovation

  • Skills and technology: new techniques, new resourcing arrangements
  • Addressing capacity constraints through innovation
  • Energy and climate change: delivering step-change solutions, energy efficiency in a carbon-constrained world, energy auditing and efficiency improvements

Terms & Conditions

  • Abstracts must be submitted via email by close of business Friday 7 March 2008.
  • Abstracts must be submitted using the MCA abstract template (found on MCA website)and all fields must be filled in for the abstract to be considered.
  • Due to limited space not all submitted abstracts will be accepted.
  • Abstracts must not exceed 250 words
  • If your abstract is successful you will be notified via email.
  • Speakers will receive one complimentary, one-day registration per presentation.
  • Speakers are responsible for all other expenses associated with participation in the Conference.
  • Presenters will be required to submit contact details, biography and photograph
  • By submitting an abstract for review you are consenting to the use of your name, abstract and presentation title in the promotion of the SD Conference as determined by the Minerals Council of Australia.
