Climate

Cairns boasts a superb tropical climate all year round. 

Cairns has a typical tropical climate, with really only two distinct seasons.

'Winter' begins in May and runs through to November.  It is the dry season – a time usually of idyllic weather, with sunshine, low humidity, little rain and fresh breezes. 'Summer' extends from December to April.

Temperatures in Cairns are recorded in Celsius.  The average maximum temperature is 31.4C (or 88.5 F) and the average minimum temperature is 17.0C (or 62.6F).  Cairns has an annual average rainfall of 2010mm (or 62 inches).  The ocean temperature varies from a high of 28.7C (or 83.6 F) in February to a pleasant low of 23.2C (or 73.7 F) in July.

Great Barrier Reef

Cairns is the closest departure point to the Great Barrier Reef.  The reef is accessible from Cairns, Port Douglas, Palm Cove and Mission Beach .

World Heritage Rainforests

  • The region boasts some of the richest rainforest in the world covering 900,000 hectares.
  • The region's tropical rainforests are protected under World Heritage listing.  Best known - World Heritage rainforests around Mossman, Daintree, Cape Tribulation, Mission Beach and Atherton Tablelands.
  • Easily accessible to visitors by four wheel drive vehicle, luxury coach, scenic flights or river cruises.
