Minerals Week 2004
'Engaging with an Innovative Industry'
31 May - 3 June 2004
Hyatt Hotel - Canberra, Australia
Innovation is as much a core element of the Australian minerals
industry's international competitiveness, as the rich resource
endowment that contributes to Australia's natural capital.
In June 2004 Minerals Week will showcase the industry's embrace of
innovation and provide a high-level forum for the industry to engage
with key opinion leaders on the practical implications for the industry
of key public policy decisions.
Innovation provides opportunities through market access and
productivity improvements, it builds capacity through enabling human
and infrastructure frameworks, it guides environmental stewardship
through resource efficiency and it enhances social responsibility
through cultural change.
For the minerals industry, innovation drives continuous improvement
through the development and uptake of knowledge, leading edge
technology and process improvements. The industry is regarded as a
world leader in exploration, mine planning and mining processes,
contract mining and value adding.
It has an enviable reputation in the global market for innovative work
in areas such as environmental assessment and management, minerals
industry education, occupational health and safety technologies and
adaptive systems. In particular, Australia is a leader in the export of
mining equipment and services such as mining software systems.
On this score, though we have a great story to share, we have an even
greater imperative to engage key opinion leaders and other external
stakeholders on the industry's performance, its future direction and
its contribution to sustainable development.
Minerals Week is more than a promotion of our "innovative industry". It
is a showcase of how innovation underpins the industry's drive for
competitive advantage, its commitment to excellent environmental
performance and its focus on engagement for sound social development.
In so doing, it is an invitation for others to engage in its
development and growth to the benefit of all Australians.
