Minerals Industry Parliamentary Dinner

The Prime Minister of Australia, The Hon John Howard MP, has accepted our invitation to be the Guest of Honour at this showpiece event of the week.

RESOURCING AN INNOVATIVE INDUSTRY

Australia’s minerals industry is primed for a period of sustained growth potentially generating wealth for all Australians at levels not seen since the rapid industrialisation of East Asian economies like Japan, Korea and Taiwan in the post war era.  Led by China, global demand for minerals and metals is strong, prices are buoyant, investment confidence is high, production capacity is expanding and employment is growing.

But structural constraints threaten to limit the scale and longevity of the current expansion.  These constraints, principally in inadequate infrastructure, skills shortages and a declining inventory of known mineral reserves, are serious threats to the sector’s expansion in production and exports. Simply put, they are an unnecessary brake on the minerals industry’s capacity to accelerate to meet the burgeoning global demand for Australia’s mineral products.

As it tackles the challenges and opportunities presented by this expansion, the minerals sector remains committed to its three-dimensional framework for sustainable development – Enduring Value.

This strategic platform enables the industry to balance economic competitiveness, social responsibility and environmental stewardship through its operational cycle from exploration, mining and processing to export.

Minerals Week 2005 – the industry’s annual high-level public policy dialogue – will present the industry’s perspectives on how the current expansion opportunities can be realised without compromising the industry’s commitment to sustainable development.

The week long program will comprise a series of events and meetings, including the Minerals Industry Seminar, Skills Day and the Annual Parliamentary Dinner, providing an opportunity for the industry to engage directly with political leaders, their advisors, senior government officials, the diplomatic community, NGOs and the media.
