About The Minerals Tertiary Education Council

The Minerals Tertiary Education Council (MTEC) was set up in October 1999 by the Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) to build a world-class tertiary learning environment for the education of professionals for the Australian minerals industry. In 1999, $15 million was allocated over five years with most funds committed to the development of course materials and the employment of academic staff.

Why was MTEC established?

The minerals industry concluded in its discussion paper Back from the Brink (1998) that the delivery of education in Australia's universities had to change if the industry was to maintain and grow its international competitiveness. A course of action was recommended to ensure the supply and quality of technical professionals.

How does MTEC achieve its objectives?

MTEC fosters the partnership between industry, government and academia. A network of selected university partners is dedicated to achieving true 'world class' education by cooperating in the development and delivery of undergraduate and post graduate learning in the specialist disciplines of earth sciences, mining engineering and metallurgy.

The Commonwealth Government assists through funding grants and by encouraging universities to cooperate and share resources, develop teaching excellence, support student mobility and reduce the administrative burden on universities. In the past the government Department of Education, Science and Training (DEST) has funded 12 early career lecturers at MTEC universities.

Companies in the minerals industry assist by supporting MTEC activities financially and in-kind by offering industry experience to undergradaute students.

Evaluation of MTEC 2000-2003

In 2003,  a strategic review of MTEC was completed. Submissions from universities, companies and government departments were invited.

Where to now ? 2005 onwards

After the review MTEC and its stakeholders created a Strategic Business Plan in a 3 day workshop. For details about the MTEC Strategic Plan please contact MTEC.
