Metallurgical Education Partnership (MEP)

In 2007, MTEC and its partner universities formed the Metallurgical Education Partnership (MEP) to create industry-relevant collaborative education projects in metallurgy. MTEC’s MEP partner universities are: Curtin University of Technology (WA School of Mines), Murdoch University and the University of Queensland.

The first project, which commenced in semester two 2008, is the Process Design Project (PDP). The PDP is a collaborative final-year course focused on student groups (comprised of students from the three partner universities) designing a metallurgical processing plant using actual industry data.

The course is run using a dedicated interactive website, videoconferencing, web based communication/document management tools and strong mentoring support from the lecturers involved. The course also includes two intensive workshops where all students come together to interact with industry experts via lectures and discussion forums.

The innovative learning and communication technologies being utilised along with the intrinsic nature of the role of industry make this course unique amongst final year engineering courses in Australia.
