FIFO AND DIDO IN THE AUSTRALIAN MINERALS INDUSTRY

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) is pleased to make a submission to the House Standing Committee on Regional Australia for consideration in the Inquiry into fly-in fly-out (FIFO) and drive-in drive-out (DIDO) in the Australian workforce. The submission primarily focuses on the operational workforce of the Australian minerals industry.

PASSAGE OF THE CARBON TAX THROUGH THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

The passage of legislation to introduce the world?s biggest carbon tax is a retrograde step for Australia. The Parliament has voted to reduce Australia?s standard of living, undermine the competitiveness of export and import- competing businesses and cut domestic jobs growth for no climate change gain. Australian real wages, productivity and national output will be lower as a result. This does not qualify as an economic reform.

COMPARING RECENT TRENDS IN EMISSION REDUCTIONS IN KEY NATIONS

Australia?s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 0.6 per cent in the 12 months to March 2011, while increasing strongly in many other nations. In China and the US alone, the one year increase in emissions was nearly double that of Australia?s entire emissions.

COMPARING TAX TAKE IN INTERNATIONAL CARBON PRICING SCHEMES

European Union:  Newly updated data compiled by the Centre of International Economics shows that in the 6 and a half years to June 30, 2011, the European Union?s Emissions Trading Scheme raised 3.674 billion Euros or $AUD 4.9 billion.
