THE WORLD’S BIGGEST CARBON TAX.

On all measures, the Australian carbon pricing scheme will be the world?s biggest carbon tax. The carbon price will be the world?s highest ? 50 per cent higher than the current EU ETS price, 2 and a half times the NZ carbon price and 12 times the price in the US regional scheme.

Australia?s carbon tax will add new costs to manufacturing firms employing more than 1,045,000 Australians. But only firms in sectors employing 93,600 Australians will be eligible for assistance to reduce the loss of competitiveness in domestic and global markets.

Criteria for identifying emissions-intensive, trade exposed industries

This report was commissioned by the Australian Trade and Industry Alliance to update a March 2011 analysis prepared for the Minerals Council of Australia. The report compares the assistance measures offered to emissions-intensive and trade-exposed (EITE) industries in Australia and the European Union (EU). The application of a carbon price raises concerns about the future competitiveness of these industries relative to similar industries from countries that do not impose such a price.
