Today’s Skills for all Australians announcement by Prime Minister Julia Gillard is a positive step in the right direction if we are to meet the nation’s workforce challenges. Removing barriers to Vocational Education and Training, enhancing information on the VET sector, addressing the large pool of unskilled labour and injecting extra funding into the VET System are welcome initiatives. The Commonwealth and States should negotiate the proposed funding model in good faith to ensure that all Australians benefit from a world-class VET sector.

Maximising growth in a mining boom

Australia has a once in a generation opportunity to lift its wealth. Yet rather than focus on how to maximise the benefits of the mining boom, debate has been mainly about the sectoral conflicts a mining boom creates. Focusing mainly on distribution issues risks choosing policy options that reduce the potential gains for the nation as a whole. We need policy reforms that lift Australia’s overall growth rate by encouraging resources to move into the things we are best at doing, rather than subsidising uncompetitive firms.

Industry Concerns Grow on New News of Revised Park Boundaries

The Minerals Council of Australia turned up the heat on the Northern Territory Government following news that the original boundaries to the proposed Limmen Park have been revised and has renewed calls for open and transparent decision-making from the Territory Government on the issue. “The Minerals Council of Australia has received no formal advice on any changes to the proposed park boundaries and this is a serious concern given the extent of exploration activity and investment in the region,” said Mr Stewart.

Industry Concerned on Talk of Limmen Park Announcement

The Minerals Council of Australia has raised concerns over what it believes is an imminent announcement by the Territory Government on the proposed Limmen Park in the Roper Region and has raised concerns at the timing of any announcement in the lead-up to the Territory elections. The Executive Director of the Minerals Council of Australia - NT Division, Mr Peter Stewart said that he believed that an announcement declaring a park was imminent despite raising concerns around the lack of consultation and highlighting various interests in the region.
