The Minerals Council of Australia welcomes today’s launch of the National Tyre Product Stewardship Scheme by the Minister for the Environment, the Hon Greg Hunt MP. The industry-led tyre product stewardship scheme is an important and practical first step in developing a co-ordinated national response to the management of end of life tyres.

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) is the peak industry association representing exploration, mining and minerals processing companies in Australia.  MCA members account for more than 85% of annual minerals production in Australia and a slightly higher proportion of mineral exports. Members of the MCA recognise that industry’s engagement with Indigenous peoples needs to be founded in mutual respect and in the recognition of Indigenous Australian’s rights in law, interests and special connections to land and waters.  This point is made even more acute by the fact that more than 60% of minerals operations in Australia have neighbouring Indigenous communities.

Red Tape Reduction – A Great First Step

The MCA applauds the delivery of the Red Tape Commissioner’s first tranche of reforms to reduce business costs without compromising regulatory performance. Many regulatory requirements placed on the minerals industry are archaic and deliver no beneficial outcomes; they are simply a dead weight compliance cost. The MCA actively engaged with the Commissioner to identify practical opportunities to cut red tape and four of the 36 Red Tape Reforms will directly benefit the minerals industry:
