A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia

The Minerals Council of Australia welcomes the opportunity to comment on the Australian Government?s Issues Paper on A Sustainable Population Strategy for Australia released for public comment in December 2010.

The MCA represents Australia?s exploration, mining and minerals processing industry, nationally and internationally, in its contribution to sustainable development and society. MCA member companies produce more than 85 per cent of Australia?s annual mineral output.

In responding to this issues paper the MCA makes no comment on the issues associated with a ?big? or ?small? Australia nor does our submission seek to address the impacts of population on the Capital cities and major urban areas of Australia. Our interests lie instead with the remote and regional communities in which our members operate and in particular the establishment of sustainable remote and regional communities and the maintenance of the industry?s social licence to operate. Our focus instead is a fit for purpose Australia able to meet the skilled workforce needs of the minerals industry and to support its continued growth.
