Barrick Cowal wins 5th Victorian Surface Mine Rescue Competition

The Cowal Gold Mine Emergency Response Team (West Wyalong, NSW) has won the 5th Victorian Surface Mine Rescue Competition.

Cowal took out the overall Competition Trophy as well as trophies for overall team safety, industrial rescue and team skills exercises. Richard Tait, captain of the Cowal team, took out the captain’s award.

The International Power Hazelwood Rescue Team was successful in the fire fighting exercise award.

“The Surface Mine Rescue Competition provides practical training and experience to members of mining operations, encouraging them to build skills that are vital to any emergency rescue squad. It is particularly pleasing to see the improvement in teams and individuals continually raising the bar in their pursuit of excellence,“ Minerals Council of Australia Assistant Director for Safety and Health, Ms Megan Davison said.

The surface mine competition, now in its fifth year, had a coal mining focus. The competition this year was hosted by TRUenergy’s Yallourn Mine site.

The industry’s commitment to the health and safety of its workforce has resulted in very few emergency incidents occurring on mine sites. To enable response teams to test their skills and identify areas of improvement, the mine rescue competition was established.

“Mine Rescue Competitions can give a years’ worth of training in one day,” Ms Davison said. The teams that competed in the 5th Victorian Surface Mine Rescue Competition were:

  • Estate Services Team (Yallourn coal mine)
  • IPR Hazelwood Rescue Team (Hazelwood coal mine)
  • Deanmac Fire & Rescue Team (Loy Yang coal mine)
  • Oscar 1 Quarry Mine Emergency Response Team (CFA, Bendigo)
  • Cowal Gold Mine Emergency Response Team (Barrick Gold Mine, Cowal, NSW)

The Minerals Council of Australia congratulates all the competitors in this year’s competition for their spirit of competitive goodwill and their commitment to emergency response. The MCA acknowledges the very strong support from the sponsors and volunteers from across the industry including the adjudicators and patients.
We would like to especially acknowledge this year’s main competition sponsors, William Adams, Cat Rental, Hughes Plant Hire and Coalville Excavations, without whose generous support the competition would not be possible.
