COMPARING RECENT TRENDS IN EMISSION REDUCTIONS IN KEY NATIONS

Key Points

Emissions trends:
Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions fell by 0.6 per cent in the 12 months to March 2011, while increasing strongly in many other nations.

In China and the US alone, the one year increase in emissions was nearly double that of Australia’s entire emissions.

Coal consumption trends:
While Australia’s coal consumption fell by 3.6 per cent in 2010, use of coal increased strongly in many other major economies.

China’s consumption of coal grew by 15 per cent in 2010 – in fact the increase in China’s consumption of coal (thermal and coking) in 2010 was greater than Australia’s total production of coal.
