The Minerals Council of Australia, Victorian Division’s (MCA) is pleased to make a submission on the above mentioned Draft Guideline.

Environmental Best Practice

The MCA has established a strong record for leadership in environmental best practice in minerals development. This commitment to continuous improvement in minimising the industry’s environmental impacts is a fundamental plank of the industry’s broader commitment to sustainable development. This is demonstrated by the MCA’s requirement that member companies are signatories to Enduring Value – the Australian Minerals Industry’s Framework for Sustainable Development.

The MCA welcomes the EPA’s Draft Guidelines on Demonstrating Best Practice (the guidelines). Such a guide is a useful companion to the statutory policies and regulatory requirements that industry must comply with that cite “best practice” as the standard. However MCA has a number of concerns with some of the assumptions, claims and assertions in the draft guidelines.

In the What is best practice? section the MCA has some concerns with the paragraphs under the heading “Best practice is preventative”.
