Fosterville Gold Mine Emergency Response Team (Crocodile Gold) has won a very competitive 21st Annual Victorian Mine Rescue Competition, proudly sponsored by the Minerals Council of Australia, Victorian Division.

The competition tests the capabilities and qualities of mine rescue and emergency response units in fire fighting, search and rescue, first aid, rope rescue, breathing apparatus and team skills. It is designed to improve the safety and health of all people involved in the mining industry and to provide invaluable practical and realistic training to mine rescue teams.

Teams were assessed by accredited safety instructors from across Australia and in a very even competition; five of the eight teams won an event.

The industry’s commitment to the health and safety of its workforce has resulted in continual decline in emergency incidents on mine sites. Intensive exercises that replicate potential real life scenarios provides teams with invaluable training across a range of skills and allows mine rescue personnel to deal with a range of controlled emergency situations.

MCA Victorian Division, Executive Director, Ms Megan Davison said: “The Victorian Mine Rescue Competition provides practical training experience to members of mining operations, encouraging them to apply teamwork to build skills that are vital to these specialised emergency rescue teams”.

“The competition fosters strong team spirit, competitiveness and goodwill among the rescue teams and their supporters, with over 150 people attending the presentation dinner on Sunday night. I congratulate all team members for commitment to emergency response.”

“This competition is an important part of the minerals industry’s health and safety strategy. Our goal of zero fatalities and injuries remains the minerals industry’s number one value and commitment.”
