MCA submission to Senate Inquiry into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals

The MCA welcomes the opportunity to add its perspective to the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade's inquiry into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  The purpose of the MCA's submission is to reaffirm the Australian minerals industry's commitment to sustainable development and outline work underway to further understand the SDGs in the context of the Australian mining sector.

Development of Australia's natural resources provides the minerals and metals that form the foundation of modern life.  Responsible development of these resources is also a catalyst for sustainable development and prosperity in communities in which this activity occurs, and across broader Australian society.  This contribution occurs across the three dimensions of sustainable development: social inclusion, economic growth and environmental protection.

From the MCA's perspective, the SDGs provide a framework to guide, articulate and maximise the Australian minerals industry long-standing commitment to sustainable development.  A number of MCA member companies have also undertaken significant work to understand how their business activities currently or could further contribute to achievement of the SDGs in Australia and overseas.
