MCA submission to the variation to the Code of Practice for Mineral Exploration

The Minerals Council of Australia Victorian Division (MCA Victoria) welcomes the opportunity to provide comment on the variation to the Code of Practice for Mineral Exploration and notes that feedback from industry has generally been positive.

MCA Victoria has worked with The Department of State Development, Business and Innovation (DSDBI) in close collaboration over a number of years to achieve changes to the Mineral Resources (Sustainable Development) Act 1990 (MR(SD)A).  A commitment to amend the definition of low impact exploration, which is due to come into effect on 1 November 2014, was given in response to the 2005 Victorian Competition and Efficiency Commission’s Inquiry into Regulatory Barriers to Regional Economic Development.  Subsequent reviews reinforced this commitment and as such, while the minerals industry is pleased that a revised definition progressed through Parliament in early 2014, it is profoundly disappointed that this reform has taken so long to be completed.

Comments are provided on specific sections of the variation to the Code of Practice for Minerals Exploration.  MCA Victoria looks forward to working with DSDBI on its finalisation.
