MTEC Key Performance Measures Report 2015

MTEC collects enrolment and destination data from minerals departments across the disciplines of mining engineering, minerals geoscience, and metallurgy at partner universities.

In 2015, mining engineering enrolments continue to be dramatically lower in the 1st year. This will result in decreased graduates in coming years. Earth science enrolments are lower in the 1st year, higher in the 2nd and 3rd years of study, and are rising gradually in the honours (4th year). Metallurgy enrolments are higher across the 2nd, 3rd and 4th years and steady on the long term average.

It would also appear that the current minerals business cycle is affecting the number of students considering professional careers in the minerals industry. Only 27 per cent of the mining engineering graduates surveyed in 2014 had entered the minerals industry.

MTEC modelling through to 2018 forecasts a plateauing of final year enrolments in earth science, a status quo in metallurgy and a continuing decrease in mining engineering.
