Review of the Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Act (NT)

We welcome the opportunity to provide a submission in response to the review of the Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Act (NT).

The Minerals Council of Australia (MCA) represents Australia’s exploration, mining and minerals processing industry, nationally and internationally, in its contribution to sustainable development and society. In the Northern Territory, members represent over 100 individual mining, exploration and related industry companies, which comprise around 20% of the Northern Territory’s gross state product and employ around 4,600 people.

Any reform to the Construction Industry Long Service Leave and Benefits Act (NT) must strike a balance between providing an appropriate return to NT Build and its people whilst not disrupting the business and investment landscape for the mining industry. Investment decisions in the resources sector are impacted by uncompetitive schemes which can in turn discourage investment into that region, which has a flow on impact to the broader economic health of the community. The Minerals Council of Australia NT Division deems it disappointing that the Chairman of NT Build has been appointed to conduct this review and believes the review should have been conducted by an independent organisation.
