The Minerals Council of Australia, in conjunction with BHP Billiton and Downer Mining, has awarded four scholarships to women to help them progress towards company board positions.

The scholarships, valued at $9500 each, have been awarded to women working in the mining industry to enable them to complete the world-class Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) Company Directors’ Course during 2016.

The scholarship winners are:

  • Laura Tyler, BHP Billiton
  • Meryl Jones, St Barbara Ltd
  • Frances Burgess, Mt Isa Mines Limited, a Glencore company
  • Janette Hewson, Peabody Energy

The scholarships are an MCA initiative to encourage more female participation on mining company boards.

The Company Directors Course provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the major challenges facing company directors in today’s business environment, as well as equipping them with the skills and knowledge necessary to effectively undertake the duties of a company director.

The 2015-16 scholarships continue the success of a program which has seen eleven women complete the Company Directors’ Course in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

This year 31 women applied for the scholarship, representing a continued interest in board positions among the community of talented women working in mining.

To further increase this pool of board ready women, MCA will award a further seven highly commended applicants with access to an e-learning module offered by the AICD. They are:

  • Linda Dawson, Rio Tinto
  • Melanie Gordon, BHP Billiton
  • Lara Bruhns, Newmont
  • Melinda Macleod, BHP Billiton Iron Ore
  • Linda O’Farrell, Fortescue Metals Group
  • Michelle Keegan, Dyno Nobel
  • Bobbie Foot, BHP Billiton Iron Ore
