New Executive Director, Minerals Council of Australia - Northern Territory Division

The Minerals Council of Australia has appointed Mr Peter Stewart as Executive Director of the Minerals Council of Australia ? Northern Territory Division. Mr Stewart brings a wealth of minerals industry experience to the position having most recently served as President (North America) of GMC Global and before that holding a range of positions with Burdekin River Resources, Rio Tinto Iron Ore, Newmont and Normandy Mining Limited. He also spent three years as Director of Contracts and Procurement for the NT Government.
?Peter has been involved with the minerals industry for much of his working life and, with his experience in Government, will be an asset to the industry in the Territory as it continues to expand to meet the burgeoning global demand for Australia?s resources,? MCA Chief Executive Officer Mitch Hooke said.
Mr Stewart replaces Scott Perkins who joined the Northern Territory Resources Council in May 2008. The NTRC merged with the MCA last year.
Mr Bryan Quinn, General Manager of GEMCO and President of the MCA-NT Management Committee said Scott Perkins had done a great job advancing the interests of the industry.
?The industry greatly appreciates Scott?s efforts and determination to ensure that mining remains the backbone of the Territory?s economy. The Management Committee looks forward to working with Peter as the NT industry continues to expand,? Mr Quinn said.
Peter Stewart commences with the MCA NT on November 8.

Miners support new approach to Native Title in Victoria

The Minerals Council of Australia, Victorian Division welcomed the introduction of the Traditional Owner Settlement Bill into the Victorian Parliament today. The Bill provides an alternative framework for the settlement of native title claims through agreements between the traditional owner groups and the State, thereby removing unresolved native title claims from the register.

Miners question need for new Vic mining laws

The Minerals Council of Australia, Victorian Division today questioned whether the Minerals Resources Amendment (Sustainable Development) Bill introduced into Parliament today by the Minister for Energy and Resources, the Hon Peter Batchelor, will increase exploration activity in the State.
