PASSAGE OF THE CARBON TAX LEGISLATION

The passage of the world?s biggest carbon tax legislation through the Senate today is a missed opportunity to get the design of the scheme right. It is profoundly disappointing that the Federal Government has failed to harness the business sector?s determination to act on climate change with a scheme that simply imposes significant new costs on the economy for no environmental gain.

MTEC 2011 Key Performance Measures Report

In 2011, first year undergraduate enrolments increased at the MTEC universities in the minerals industry core disciplines of earth science, mining engineering and metallurgy. First year enrolments in earth science and mining engineering have returned to 2008 levels (prior to the financial correction experienced that year) while first year enrolments in metallurgy have decreased significantly. A consequence of the financial correction of 2008-2009 will be decreased numbers of graduates across the disciplines in 2012-2013.

EXTRACTIVE INDUSTRIES TRANSPARENCY INITIATIVE PILOT

The Federal Government announcement of a trial of the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative is welcomed by the Minerals Council of Australia. The MCA proposed the pilot and we are very pleased the Government has decided to support a program that contributes to the global pursuit of greater transparency and accountability. The EITI will also help inform current and future debates about mining?s economic contribution to Australia.

ESTATE SERVICES WINS 6th VICTORIAN SURFACE MINE RESCUE COMPETITION

The Estate Services Emergency Response Team has won the 6th Victorian Surface Mine Rescue Competition. Estate Services provides emergency response at TRUenergy?s Yallourn Coal Mine in the Latrobe Valley. Estate Services took out the overall Competition Trophy as well as trophies for Industrial rescue, team skills and the theory exercises.
