MINERALS INDUSTRY’S COMMUNITY SPENDING EXCEEDS $34 BILLION

The first-ever study of national minerals industry spending on community projects and local businesses further underscores why the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT) is unnecessary and should be repealed. A survey of 25 Australian mining companies, explorers and resources contractors by Corporate Social Responsibility consultants Banarra found that $34.7 billion was spent on community infrastructure, Indigenous contractors, local suppliers and other activities in 2011-12.

INTRODUCTION OF LEGISLATION TO REPEAL THE MINERALS RESOURCE RENT TAX

The minerals industry welcomes the introduction today of legislation to repeal the Minerals Resource Rent Tax (MRRT) in line with the Government’s election commitment to abolish the tax. The MRRT imposed an unnecessary additional impost on Australia’s mining industry and its repeal is all the more important when the industry is facing pressing challenges to improve productivity and cost competitiveness to encourage continued investment and growth.

Industry Groups United: Carbon Tax Must Go

Groups representing small, medium and large businesses employing millions of people across all sectors of the Australian economy are calling on the parliament to avoid costly delay in the repeal of the carbon tax.
