SUBMISSION TO THE WA INQUIRY INTO MENTAL HEALTH IMPACTS OF FIFO WORK ARRANGEMENTS

The MCA provided a submission to the Western Australian Government Inquiry into mental health impacts of FIFO work arrangements. The submission highlights that while long distance commuting is a common feature of the Australian economy, its use by 25% of minerals industry employees is driven by employee demand for access to infrastructure and services not available in remote Australia. The mining industry nevertheless takes great care to take account of the safety and health implications of long distance commuting. Mental illness is a significant issue in the Australian community  - given the alignment of key ‘at-risk’ groups with its workforce demographics, the minerals industry takes all possible measures to minimise any mental health risks in the workplace, to de-stigmatise mental illness and to manage workforce mental health.
