I am delighted to announce that Kira Evans is the 2012-13 winner of the Thiess - Minerals Council of Australia Women in Engineering Scholarship.

Kira is studying a Bachelor of Petroleum Engineering and Mining Engineering Combined Degree at the University of Adelaide, an institution strongly supported by MCA member companies through our Minerals Tertiary Education Council.

She has an excellent academic record and has held many student leadership roles, including as ambassador for Adelaide University’s Women in Technology Day. Her immediate career goal is to graduate and work toward a First Class Mine Manager’s Certificate.

Australia’s leading integrated construction, mining and services company Thiess, in partnership with the MCA, the national body representing Australia’s mining and minerals processing industry, invites students from across the country to apply for the scholarship.

Now in its fifth year, the award is open to all female undergraduate engineering students studying in Australia and provides $8000 per annum for the final two years of study. It aims to advance the role of women in the resources sector.

The Thiess – MCA partnership is helping identify the next generation of talented female engineers.

I am also pleased to announce that the MCA will fund two scholarships to the Australian Institute of Company Directors - Company Directors Course to help increase the leadership credentials of women in the minerals industry.

The AICD offers world class governance education through its Company Directors Course and will help equip scholarship holders with the skills and knowledge to take on company directorships.

The scholarships, worth $9,200 each include registration for the course, one year membership of the AICD and travel and accommodation expenses.
