Whitehaven Coal Maules Creek - Production Commences

The Minerals Council of Australia welcomes the commencement of production and the transport of coal from Whitehaven Coal’s $767 million Maules Creek Mine Project.

This latest project in the NSW Gunnedah Basin is testament to the important contribution the coal industry makes in regional Australia.  That includes the creation of new jobs and investment which provide significant and long lasting economic benefits.

There is also a significant contribution to training and employment opportunities for local Indigenous communities in this project with 27 Indigenous people employed in the 176-strong workforce – a ratio of 15 per cent, well above Whitehaven’s original target of at least 10 per cent Indigenous participation.

Despite comprehensive scrutiny by relevant governments and regulators, the project has been the subject of concerted, misleading and unfair attacks from anti-mining activists. It is critically important for the local economy in the Gunnedah Basin, the NSW economy as well as the national economy that this campaign has failed.

Australia is an internationally competitive and reliable supplier of coal. The coal industry remains a mainstay of our export performance, generating export earnings of approximately $800 million every week.

The prospects for the sector are strong, with the International Energy Agency forecasting that global coal trade will grow by 40 per cent by 2040, with Australia regaining its position at the world biggest exporter before 2030.
