STUDENT BACKGROUND

Sailing was first introduced as an Olympic sport in 1900 at the Paris Olympics.

Sailing in the Beijing 2008 Olympics will rely on high tech materials made from minerals taken from the Earth's crust.
Modern yachts need to be -
  1. light
  2. very strong
  3. water resistant
  4. able to be moulded into complicated shapes
  5. easily maintained
  6. quickly repaired if damaged
  7. exciting to sail
