Information Sheet - Athens 2004 Olympic Torch

The final design of the Athens 2004 torch was selected from 21 proposals. Created by Greek industrial designed Mr Andreas Varotsos, the winning torch's shape had been designed to look like a leaf from an olive tree.

The olive tree is very much a part of the Greek landscape, is a worldwide symbol for peace and freedom and its leaves were made into wreaths awarded to winners in the ancient Olympics.

Design Features

• Is made of olive-wood and magnesium metal (to highlight the link between Greek history and modern times)
• Is 68 centimetres (27 inches) long
• Weighs 700 grams (21 ounces)
• Is designed to enhance, and be a continuation of, the flame by its upward, curved shape.
