These people volunteer enormous amounts of spare time to be trained in life saving techniques also selflessly place themselves on call for emergency situations. They represent a unique band of respected individuals.
So why have a competition?
A mine rescue competition is a way of testing out the capabilities and qualities of a mine rescue or emergency response team.
The Competition Committee tries to make the tasks as stressing, taxing and as real as possible. We endeavour to put the teams under any situations they could expect from attending a real emergency.
Whether it is from noise, aggressive patients, wet, darkness, inaccessible or hidden patients, the demands are all very real. To top all that off, we then give them a time limit to complete the exercise.
The aim is not only to test the knowledge and training of these teams but to perhaps show that another approach may also work.
