Improving national safeguards for Indigenous heritage protection

Improving national safeguards is the next phase in the ongoing modernisation of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultural heritage protection framework.

The Australian Government’s partnership with the First Nations Heritage Protection Alliance will support engagement of diverse Traditional Owners and custodians, which will be central to this important process.

As recognised by Minister Ley, stakeholder engagement will be central to success of the initiative. The minerals industry looks forward to joining other major land users in contributing to the discussion.

Simplifying interactions between state, territory and Commonwealth laws and systems will support stronger Traditional Owner and custodian engagement by clarifying expectations and ensuring clear, predictable pathways for land users.

The minerals industry values and respects Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, heritage and knowledge. The sector is working to continually strengthen its relationships with partner First Nations communities.
